As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
