Doris Makes Ireland Team But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby squad announcement news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn internationals, however Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre options. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
