California Sober: Study Suggests Cannabis May Help Reducing Drinking Consumption

Emerging scientific investigation released in the prestigious psychiatry journal proposes that adopting a “California sober” method might significantly help individuals reduce their alcohol use.

The Study and Controlled Environment Scenario

Researchers from Brown University conducted a novel study where participants received marijuana joints to consume before entering a specially designed simulated bar environment.

  • Subjects had the option to consume up to 8 mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The trial was repeated on three occasions with varying THC levels: 7.2%, moderate potency, and a placebo marijuana.

Significant effort was taken to replicate a real-life bar environment, complete with low light and drinks on tap to ensure participant authenticity.

“Our goal was to ensure that when presented with the chance, you would be really driven to drink,” stated the principal investigator.

Key Findings and Effects on Drinking

Results revealed a marked decrease in alcohol consumption after participants smoked cannabis:

  • Drink consumption fell by nineteen percent after consuming 3.1% THC cannabis.
  • Reduction was more significant with 7.2% THC cannabis, leading to a 27% reduction compared to the control.

Broader Context and Future Research

Expanded legalization has driven a major surge in marijuana usage, which has doubled over the last ten years.

Meanwhile, drink consumption is at a historic low, with many turning to substitutes like marijuana.

Crucial to note that 40% of study subjects met the criteria for alcohol use disorder.

Although cannabis could serve as a potential solution to excessive alcohol use, scientists warn that further study is needed.

“It is premature to advise people seeking treatment for drinking problems, ‘Go ahead and substitute cannabis, and it will be effective for you,’” the lead researcher noted.
